Ten years after the Roma killings in Hungary

On Saturday evening a crowd will gather in Budapest to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the murder of five-year-old Robika Csorba and his father Robert, victims of a murderous series of attacks on Roma settlements across Hungary in 2008 and 2009. Six Roma were slain and over 50 others wounded in the wave of far-right terror, which left the maimed and the bereaved severely traumatized.

After midnight on 23 February 2009, in the village of Tatárszentgyörgy, attackers first threw Molotov cocktails, setting the Csorba family home ablaze. On hearing the bangs, Robert  grabbed his two eldest children, while his partner took the youngest child Maté.  As Robert fled the burning house, holding Robika close to his chest and Bianka by his side, a waiting gunman opened fire hitting all three. Only Bianka would survive.

His grandmother said, “I was holding Robi’s head in my lap, and he kept saying ‘le, le, le’ meaning he was shot but he couldn’t get the whole word out. My little grandson was gasping with his eyes closed. With tears rolling down his face. Putting so many shots into such a small child barely 11 kilos. May their lungs dry up.”

The book "Romology" by Dr. Rajko Djuric has been published

The team for Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction from the Government of the Republic of Serbia (SIPRU) published the book “Romology”, which presents the tendency of its author Rajko Djuric to promote this important interdisciplinary field.

Romology is also implied for the Roma and as well as for the non-Roma community. Besides the terminologies, definitions and the development of the Romology as a scientific subject, it also reviews the culture, identity, history (where a big part is taken by the Holocaust of the Roma), grammar and standardization of the Romani language. Dr. Rajko Djuric was a renowned fighter for Roma rights and a writer, publicist and one of the best connoisseurs of the history of the Roma people, culture and language.

Out of 11 million euros in the field of culture for 2021, less than 50,000 euros have been allocated for the Roma!

The recently published results from the call in the cultural area for 2021 at the media press from the Minister for Culture Dr. Irena Stefovska announced that the 2021 call received a record breaking 6352 applications.

According to the Ministry for culture in 2021 it supports projects which will develop, affirm and promotion of culture, protection and promotion of the cultural heritage of our country and all of this is added with projects from the youth and for the youth. A special emphasis was placed on equal gender representation, inclusion of disabled individuals and intercultural dialogue.

What is "eye-catching" is that from the total budget in the amount of around 11 million euros from various areas of culture, there are less than 50.000 euros allocated for the purposes of the Roma cultural activities, out of the total 6325 applications, the Roma have around twenty approved projects. Are the Roma and the Romani community able to do that, as Minister Stefoska mentioned, quoting the words of the Dutch historian and one of the founders of modern cultural history Johan Hozinga: "If we want to preserve culture, we must continue to create it” Are you able to create culture without any money? If you can, let’s see how.
