Stereotypes during the census in Serbia: Census takers ask underage Roma children if they are married or married

The Roma movement Opre Roma Serbia, which was actively involved in the campaign for the census in Serbia that ended on October 31, held a press conference in the media center in Belgrade due to their dissatisfaction with the just completed population census in Serbia.

According to them, this as well as the previous censuses, the Roma were historically undercounted due to oppression, injustice, biased methodology, inequality in political power, and the lack of enough Roma actors to be part of the census.

It is shocking to note that the questions asked by some enumerators, who asked questions to minor children, whether they are married or married, and for whom, as they say, it is obvious that they either do not know the family law on marriage and marital relations persons under 16 years of age or it is suspected that such questions are stereotypical, discriminatory and prejudiced.

Unofficially, according to the research of Opre Roma Serbia, about 500,000 Roma live in Serbia.

Today we celebrate the International Day of the Romani Language and Culture, as part of our Macedonian cultural wealth and the wealth of all humanity.

The Romani language (originally: rromani ćhib) is the mother tongue of the Roma. It is part of the Indo-Aryan group of languages, more precisely it is classified as either the Central Indo-Aryan languages or the Northwest Indo-Aryan languages. Quite often it is also classified as its own separate language branch due to the large number of related language varieties.

According to ISO standards, the language is placed in the group of macro languages and consists of seven sub-languages or major dialects. The largest dialect is Vlach-Skorom with about 1.5 million speakers, followed by Balkan-rom, Karpatrrom, Sintrom, Welsh-rom, Kalo-Finnish and Balticrom.
