Roma participants in the war in BiH forgotten by the state

Bajro Beganović from Sarajevo was a member of the BiH Army during the war. Like his two sons. One still lives in Sarajevo and the other, Samir, died in 1993 as a member of the BiH Army:

- Today, the citizens of Sarajevo and their comrades-in-arms said goodbye to Igor Pavlović, son of Dragan, and Samir Beganović, son of Bajra - the announcement of the Information Service of the First Corps on the day of their burial. He was 20 years old:

- Samir Beganović was born on August 5, 1963. in Sarajevo and belongs to the constellation of brave people who stood on the defensive of the homeland, convinced that in this way will provide a happier future for their children, and he had two, their mother, and their children, all mothers… And Samir is a participant in several important battles, of which we would especially emphasize the one on Žuča, but also those when Igman defended himself, when those battles decided the fate of Sarajevo. He died on December 1, 1993. years, bravely as befits true defenders of freedom - it is stated in the announcement.

Nowhere in these lines and title, written almost 26 years ago, is it mentioned that Samir Beganović was a Roma. It didn't matter then. Today it is: it can be seen from newspaper headlines and texts, in which the opportunity of labeling and emphasizing belonging to the Roma people is rarely missed when something bad happens.

Organized by SP BTR Production, the 6th Children's Festival "Čhavorikano suno 2022" will be held at the Cinematheque of Macedonia on November 4.

Like the previous editions, this 6th in a row Festival of Children's Roma Songs "Čhavorikano suno 2022" is organized by SP BTR, which this year is also financially supported by the Ministry of Culture.

The festival is planned to be held on November 4 - Friday at the Cinematheque of Macedonia starting at 10 am.

The repertoire of this year's children's festival includes 10 compositions. They will be performed by children - Roma students from primary schools in Skopje.

The topics of the songs are varied from crushes, the love of mother and father, movie stars, YouTubers and proud Roma.

The songs were recorded in Nezir Samir's studio, and produced by SP BTR Production.

Otherwise, for the visitors of this festival, the organizer made sure to organize a visit with children from primary schools, where the majority are Roma.

For that event, the organizer took care of transportation to the Cinematheque of Macedonia and back.

Study in the EU and North Macedonia: No improvement in the integration of Roma

The position of the Roma, with poor living conditions and uncertain prospects for education and work, has not improved despite the goals set by the European Union (EU), according to the report published today by the European Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), in which, in addition to the members of the Union included the candidates for membership, North Macedonia and Serbia.

Roma everywhere "continue to face shocking levels of marginalization and discrimination," FRA director Michael O'Flaherty said in a statement, adding that national policymakers should make "every effort to combat these intolerable situations."

The report, based on almost 8,500 testimonies of Roma in ten European countries, highlights "insufficient and too slow progress".

According to the Vienna-based FRA, 80 percent of members of the Roma community live in poverty, while the average for the rest of the EU population is around 17 percent. This data was the same when the last study on this topic was conducted in 2016.

More than half live in damp, dark housing units without adequate sanitation (up from 61 percent in 2016), and 22 percent have no running water (up from 30 percent six years ago).

Only 43 percent of Roma in the EU have a paid job, while the average employment rate in the Union is 72 percent.

Life expectancy for Roma women is 71 years and for Roma men 67 years, compared to 82 and 76 years for the general population in the EU.

When it comes to education, the numbers are dramatic as 71 percent of young Roma leave the education system early, while the average is only 10 percent among 18-24 year olds in the EU.

The report is based on the data collected by FRA during 2021 in the EU members – Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, as well as in the two candidate countries Serbia and North Macedonia.

In Bulgaria and Slovakia, the data were collected by the national authorities with the support of the FRA.

The initiative to name a park in Belgrade after a murdered Roma boy

"My brother would be 38 today. My brother would have his own family today."

With these words, Duška Jovanović addressed those gathered in Belgrade at the commemoration meeting on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the murder of the Roma boy Dušan Jovanović.

On October 18, 1997, he was beaten to death in front of the building where he lived by two members of the neo-Nazi "skinhead" movement.

The reason they intercepted and brutally beat the boy, who was 13 years old at the time, was his skin color.

A quarter of a century later, his sister, with the support of the non-governmental Initiative A11, submitted a proposal to the City Administration of the capital of Serbia that the park in the so-called Mitic hole near Slavija Square, in the immediate vicinity of Dušan's house, be named after him.
