Djurdjevdan / Herdelezi

Christian: Djurdjevdan, Gjergjuvden - "St. George's Day" / Muslim: Herdelezi.

The celebration in honor of Saint George is one of the most important holidays for the Roma in the Southern Balkans area. It is one of the rare holidays to be celebrated by both Muslim and Christian Orthodox Roma. In the Orthodox church year, St. George's Day falls on the 6th of May, but the festivities may begin earlier and last longer than a day. The Muslim counterpart, Herdelezi, derives from the Turk name hıdrelez, which is a blending of Hızır and Elias. According to legend, a meeting between the popular patron Saint Hızır (Arabian: el khadr – "the green one") and the prophet Elijah in the 9th century was at the origin of this once very popular Turkish spring celebration.

Czech President Miloš Zeman calls Romani refugees from Ukraine "economic migrants"

If the war continues in Ukraine, the support of the Czech nation toward refugees from there will not cool down, President Miloš Zeman has told CNN Prima News, and the Czechs will constantly see their suffering. At the same time, Zeman attacked Romani refugees from Ukraine, whom he claimed are "economic refugees".

Zeman also mentioned that Muslim refugees have been healthy young men, while those fleeing Ukraine are children and women. "The third difference is that, after all, the Ukrainians fall into our cultural circle, not just linguistically, but also because of their Christian roots and the like, while Muslim refugees live in a very different, Islamic culture," he added.

The Czech President said he expects that the war will end and many Ukrainians will return to theirhomeland. "Because they are not economic migrants, because they are really refugees from war who, under normal conditions, want to live in Ukraine," the Czech President explained his prediction.

"I would make one little exception here in terms of Romani Ukrainians, I am not sure whether they aren't more economic migrants. However, they are a very minor exception, about two thousand people," Zeman said on Terezie Tománková's program on CNN Prima News.

Municipalities do not want the "crumbs" for infrastructure projects for Roma either

Every year, the Ministry of Transport and Communications announces a competition for water supply networks, sewers, retaining walls and streets in the settlements where Roma live. Although the money is small (a total of 325,000 euros or a maximum of 65,000 euros per project), it is not spent either

Official data show that in the last few years (2016-2020) a total of 37 infrastructure projects have been financed from budget money, but most research and analysis still indicate that this is not enough.

As part of the Decade and Strategy for Roma Integration, the Municipality of Suto Orizari last year received 65,000 euros for streets that have yet to be reconstructed.

Residents of the Bitola settlement Bair have been looking for clean drinking water and sewage for years. "360 Degrees" registered those appeals on two occasions when hygiene was most important - during the Covid-19 pandemic. In both 2020 and 2021, there was no visible response to the appeals of the citizens by the institutions.

"Even if there is no virus, every child, I guarantee with life, will get sick here. We have small children, they are not bathed, nothing. "The government needs to think about these young people."
