Romani woman who fled Ukraine: Bombs and tanks drove us out of Kharkiv, we left everything behind

In the Polish town of Przemyśl, a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border, what was once a Tesco supermarket has now become a refugee detention center, and buses are transporting refugees there from the Medyka border crossing. Among those fleeing the war are Romani people from Ukraine.

One Romani Ukrainian woman in Przemyśl told ROMEA TV: "[We're from] Kharkiv. We escaped from there and left behind everything we had, including our homes."

"Now, for us, it’s normal here, we have no problem with food. All we need is something to drink and dry bread, the main thing is for the entire family to be together," she told ROMEA TV, adding that she is waiting for the rest of her family to arrive so that they can all decide where to go next together.

596 scholarships awarded to Roma students and 47 primary schools supported

A total of 596 scholarships were awarded to Roma students enrolled from first to fourth grade in the academic year 2021/2022 within the project "REGULAR CLASS: Action for inclusion of Roma in primary education", funded by the European Union.

The project is implemented by the Foundation Open Society - Macedonia, together with the Association Center for Educational Support Dendo You and the Foundation for Educational and Cultural Initiatives Step by step.

"Roma students whose families are recipients of social assistance related to family income and who renew the scholarship awarded in the academic year 2020/2021 were entitled to scholarships. Scholars come from 73 primary schools in 31 municipalities, 51% are girls and 49% are boys. "Scholarships reduce the financial costs of Roma families related to the education of their children," reads the statement of the Open Society Foundation - Macedonia.

Scholarships are awarded for a period of one school year, in the amount of 400 euros per year, and their maintenance and renewal depends on the regularity of the children in classes. The scholarship is intended to cover the costs of children's education, food, clothing, school supplies and materials, sports and other equipment for children's extracurricular activities.

"During the first half of this school year, 47 primary schools, where scholarship holders of the project study, conducted extracurricular school activities, which through play and joint participation encouraged the interaction and exchange of knowledge between students and the integration of Roma students," the Foundation said. .

The schools received support from the project of 2,500 euros per school, which includes didactic materials, school supplies, sports equipment, school furniture, library material, equipment, materials for arranging schoolyards, as well as small adaptation works for arranging creative and pleasant school corners for learning and socializing of children, parents and teachers.

The Roma Community Network for Systematic and Sustainable Solutions is still waiting for a response from several ministries on injustices and unequal treatment of Roma. Is the Roma community forced to take other alternative measures?

The Advocacy Network for Systematic and Permanent Solutions for Roma Integration in the Republic of Northern Macedonia, within its activities in the past period, sent letters and requests to several Ministries. The specific request was whether some of the appointed ministries started programming the planned budget funds for 2022 for Roma integration?

First of all, we mean the requests and letters sent to the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The Network for Systemic and Permanent Solutions, which includes 12 Roma NGOs, associations and associations from the Republic of Northern Macedonia, thinks and refers to irregularities as well as inaccuracies in the laws and inadequate representation of the Roma community in those sectors. It primarily refers to jobs and positions in the public administration intended for the Roma community and does not reflect its percentage representation. An example is that in the state and public administration there are currently 1% of Roma employees together with the employees in the utility companies who perform communal work as hygienists. Just a reminder, according to the 2002 census in the Republic of Northern Macedonia, we Roma did not have 2.6%.

At the same time, the problem with housing is emphasized, in terms of legalization of their homes, are part of the realized goals that the ministry together with the partners has been working on in the past period. The legalization of Roma homes is an unattainable dream full of nightmares and corruption. Everything can be legalized, but only the homes of the Roma do not. Most mayors claim that Roma neighborhoods are in the green belt where a park was to be built.

In the field of health, the long-standing problem with a gynecological practice in the municipality of Suto Orizari is generally known, which unfortunately still has no solution for that problem.

In the field of education, there are many problems and inconsistencies, both from preschool age and kindergartens, as well as in primary, secondary schools and higher education institutions.

In the field of justice, the problem still exists and there are legal inconsistencies in the realization of persons without documents.

As for the field of culture, an exemplary example is the burial of Roma culture, where in the last competition of the total fund of 17 million euros for the Roma community, only 30 thousand euros were allocated for 13 projects.

Otherwise, many projects in the field of culture that have their own continuity, tradition, quality and international significance have been rejected. In that context, this move of the Ministry of Culture is assessed as "Cultural genocide of the Roma"

At the same time, it must be noted that the Strategy for Roma, according to the view of a large part of the Roma NGO sector, has many omissions and illogicalities, but there are no corrections by the Government of RS Macedonia.

The Network itself has submitted a request to the competent Ministries from most of those Ministries, to date there is no response or reaction.

According to this, the question arises as to how long this ignorant attitude towards the Roma community in general will last.

And worst of all, these problems drag on for a long time without any specific explanation or appropriate solution for them.

Does this "nose-pulling" of the Roma community mean that patience is running out and it is necessary for the Roma community itself in these really difficult times to take some other alternative methods to address them.

Panic in Macedonia - Oil, flour and fuel are "grabbed"

Queues at gas stations across the country, after information appeared on social networks that there will not be enough fuel, and what will be there will be more expensive by 10 or 20 denars.

After the "episode" with the purchase of flour and oil, the Macedonians began to provide enough fuel for cars at a cheaper price, before it became more expensive or disappeared.

The state assures that there is no room for any panic in the supply of oil and oil derivatives.

A series of ironic sarcastic comments are circulating on social networks that fuel was poured in bags and they joke about the exit of the gas stations until late at night.
