All schoolbooks which have content deemed offensive or inappropriate for the Albanians will be removed, but will the term “Gypsies” be removed?

"Wherever there is content that offends, degrades or is not appropriate, we should remove it and we will remove it," said Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, referring to the Geography textbook for the second year of secondary education, which will be withdrawn following reactions that contain content offensive to Albanians.

The Minister of Education and Science Mila Carovska and her predecessor Arber Ademi, yesterday at a working meeting with the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Political System and Inter-Community Relations Artan Grubi discussed the concept of education reform and the Law on Textbooks for Primary and Secondary Education. Withdrawal from the teaching of the textbook Geography of the Republic of Macedonia for the second year - reformed high school with a letter to the Ministry of Education and Science requested the Youth Forum of the Alliance for Albanians. The letter stated that parts of the textbook were offensive to the culture, history and other values ​​of the Albanians in the country, that they were xenophobic and contributed to the stigmatization and encouragement of hate speech against Albanians.

The Albanian public is shocked by the content of the textbook which states that “among the current Macedonian Albanians there are people who see themselves as natives. This mainly is Macedonian population which during the Turkish occupation took in Islam and in time became Albanians. Among them there are people who come from the then Turks, Roma or Cherkezi”. According to the logic, will those changes also remove inappropriate content which use offensive terms for the Roma such as “Gypsies”. Is someone “man” enough to propose these changes?

 

Štefan Oláh: It's very important Roma identify themselves as such during the Czech census

"It is very important for Roma to declare their nationality this year," says Štefan Oláh, a civic member of the Government Council for Roma Minority Affairs. The census will take place in March and May. Czech and Romani. "The data you enter in the form is subject to the law of confidentiality, so the person's name and declaration of nationality cannot be misused. Such concerns exist among the Roma. So there is no need to worry, the data will be informative. According to them, the strategy of Roma integration will then be followed correctly. It will not be published who has declared their nationality, but only the total number of citizens who declare their nationality, which they feel is theirs, "Oláh explains. Indication of nationality or affiliation to a nation, national or ethnic minority is not mandatory. Two nationalities can be filled in. "If you feel like a Czech, choose the Czech nationality option. If you feel like a Czech, but you are a Roma at heart, you can choose Czech and Roma nationality, the order in which you list them is up to you, ”explains Oláh.  It is also possible to mention two mother tongues, for example Czech and Romani.  The online census will start at midnight from March 26 to 27. via an online form or in a mobile application. Persons who do not count online can use the paper form of the census, which will take place from 17.4. to 11.5. It will be possible to obtain and submit the forms from the Census Commissioners or at any contact point of the Census 2021. It will be possible to visit these at selected branches of the Czech Post and all regional administrations of the Czech Statistical Office. Forms for paper censuses obtained by other means, such as copying, cannot be used for Census 2021 and are considered invalid. The census 2021 is obligatory for all persons who have a permanent residence or a temporary stay of more than 90 days in the territory of the Czech Republic at the decisive moment, ie at midnight from 26 to 27 March 2021. Each such person must be added together, regardless of the place of actual residence, age, autonomy and state of health. For persons under the age of 18, non-self-employed and similar, the census is performed by their legal representative, guardian or a person authorized to do so. The census also applies to all foreigners present in the Czech Republic at the relevant time.

Using rap music against discrimination, Muha Blackstasy – a rising star!

On the 13th of February 2021, the Serbian branch RAM was the host of the rapper and writer Muhamed Elshani from Novi Sad, known as Muha Blackstasy. He was the first Roma perform at the 2006 “EXIT” festival which is one of the biggest festivals in Serbia. His first album “Crni smo mi – We are black” was published in 2007. His song from 2003 with the same title made him famous. For the documentary film for the Roma community in Novi Sad “Last hole of the whistle” he created the music which was titled as “We are Roma brothers”

Muha Blackstasy openly speaks on the discrimination of the Roma in his lyrics. He participated at many international arts projects and participated in various festivals campaigning for human rights and against discrimination and social exclusion.

The city of Skopje published a list for renaming streets, squares and boulevards. Among them are the names of Esma Redjepova Teodosievska and Faik Abdi

The City of Skopje recently published a list of 571 names of cities, places and people according to which the streets, squares and parks in the capital will be named.

“The list includes names of renowned individuals in the area of the city, national and international cultural and historic heritage, important events from the Macedonian and world history, names given by toponyms of cities in the country and the region and other names. Among the names are two from the Roma community. They are the former first Roma MP in the Macedonian Parliament Faik Abdi and the prominent international Roma singer and humanist Esma Redjepova Teodosievska. Also interesting names are David Bowie, the groups "Queen", "Leb I Sol" and "Leva Patika" and others.
