Macedonia will pay damages to the families of two Roma who passed away in prison!

The Government will pay a total of 24.000 Euros to the families of two male Roma who passed away in suspicious circumstances while they were in prison in 2017, announced the European Center for Roma Rights (ECCR)

The European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) closed two cases after reaching an agreement between the members of the families and the Government.

Andrias Redjepov, 21 year old Roma, died in the Idrizovo prison in Skopje on the 11th of March in 2017. The ECRR imply that there was a report of a prisoner who passed away due to methadone overdose, even though the prisoner wasn’t a drug addict. There’s evidence that, in the hours before his death, Redjepov was exposed to torture. His parents will receive a compensation of 6.000 per parent.

Jusinov Erdal was a 25 year old male who died on the 22nd of March in 2017 in the Stip prison due to a lack of medical attention which he needed in the hours before his death. Jusinov was married and is a father of a 3 year old boy and a 1 year old girl. Also, this case implies that he was abused from the prison gourds and doctors, his sister will receive a compensation of 12.00 Euros.

The ECCR say that these deaths are a part of a series of four suspicious death cases of Roma prisoners in a period of 9 months in 2017, in several prisons all over North Macedonia. In North Macedonia, they say that, the pattern of deaths involving drug overdoses and allegations of ill-treatment has been going on for several years, for which the ERRC has been suing since 2010.

“All of North Macedonia should see each of these tragic deaths as a disgrace for the country. This is the third case in the recent years in which the ECCR sued North Macedonia and secured thousands of Euros as compensation for the families of the dead – and will continue to investigate these cases of suspicious deaths and to take legal measures if the authorities deny to take responsibility for their mishaps. From 2017, these such mistakes have cost the Macedonian tax payers well over 33.000 Euros in compensations, and the ECCR have other cases which are waiting to be solved. This needs to be a message for the responsible authorities that the institutional discrimination is a costly mistake, and that we will make sure that you pay dearly”, stated the President of the ECCR – Gjorgje Jovanovikj.

Although an amicable settlement means that no verdict of condemnation will be handed down to the competent authorities in Northern Macedonia, according to the ERRC, the payment of compensation in this amount to some extent addresses the seriousness of human rights violations and can be considered a silent acceptance of guilt by the Government of Northern Macedonia.

The case from the ECCR regarding the suspicious death of another Roma – the 39 year old Bekim Demir is still awaiting conclusion at the ECHR.

The first female Roma band in the world is from Serbia: We want the girls to stop thinking that they have to be silent in front of their husbands!

Their band Pretty Loud began their rise within the music scene, but everything we love about Romani music is only getting better because of these brave girls.

Think about it, have you ever heard of a Roma girl band? Let us help you, you haven’t. They’re the first one, not only in Serbia, but in the whole world! That is why we are saying that they’re a brave group because they opened a new road for all of the future generations of Roma girls. Still, their words are having an effect upon all other women, because of the fact that through their songs, they’re creating a movement to stop the women from staying silent about their problems, just so that we don’t ignore the injustices we endure. Silvia, Zlata, Selma and Elma performed as representatives of the women’s movement and the band Pretty Loud and talked about everything which they want to achieve through their musical actions for the other women to feel good and most of all to feel safe in the society in which we live in.

Pretty Loud is a part of the GRUBB Foundation, and in order to make things more clear – we educate Roma children and we also have artistic workshops for dance, rap, music and acting, where the children can realize their talents and fight for what they want through art and performances. We founded Pretty Loud within the frames of the foundation, we wanted to have our own female band in which we could express our opinions and feelings through our songs in order to fight for our cause – says Silvia Sinani.

“Our goal was to be the first group to do such a thing and to find a female Roma band because we demand the same rights as the men, and the best weapon to do this is through music and dance” – says Zlata Ristic.

Silvia admits that it is a difficult task when it comes to raising awareness in women which are used to stay silent and endure injustice.

“It’s very difficult, because for them, it seems like the right thing to do is to remain silent about it, and we don’t want that! We want to express emotions and messages through our songs, no matter the age of the female. It is important to do this, to understand that it’s not good to stay silent and to understand that they have the right to speak up no matter the subject. They will eventually start to gradually understand, we don’t expect sudden and drastic changes – what’s important is for them to not stay silent!”.

BBC REPORT: Horrible living conditions within the Romani settlements, no electricity, no water, no access to the internet!

Often times, the Romani community is one of the most marginalized nation within Europe. Over 12 million people are mostly living in poverty, often times in overcrowded places. The pandemic devastated their communities, further distancing them from the remainder of society. Although the residents in these settlements are oftentimes cautious when letting in journalists, the BBC reporter Jean Mackenzie was invited to one of the largest Romani settlements in Bulgaria in Sliven.  As she reports, the Roma communities throughout Europe were often avoided and often forgotten, and the Covid-19 pandemic in this moment, put them in a situation where they are fighting to survive.

-We usually don’t have running water. We have no electricity. We don’t have roads. What we do have is dirtiness and mud. We don’t even have access to the internet for the children to follow their on-line classes! – As said by the citizens of this settlement.

-Even dogs can’t live like this, in these horrible conditions. The sewage system doesn’t function, people don’t even have toilets. People are throwing their toilet waste outside on the open – says a local from this residence. Some members of this community have fled from poverty, seeking seasonal jobs in the United Kingdom.

The Bulgarian Government claims that there is no discrimination

- There is no discrimination from the authorities or the Government towards the Roma people. Towns were put under quarantine, regardless their ethnic background. As stated by officials.
