Every sixth citizen is a member of a political party in the Republic of North Macedonia – is this due to interests or ideologies?

Is it an ideology of political opinion or demagogy for realizing personal interests?

Are the political parties the only way to succeed and progress?

In the Balkans the “popularity” of the party memberships is not fading away any time soon. Unlike the countries in the region in which up to 15% of the population are registered as party members, the European average is 3.5% from the total population in the countries Less than a month ago, the Governing Social Democratic Union of Macedonia started the process to update and to actively register its membership. This means that 1563 teams from 74 Municipal Organization will be on field visiting the homes of their members. The expectations of the SDSM Leadership is that after the update is finished, they will have around 60.000 members. Meaning that approximately 3% of the population of the country is a member of the Governing party. However, the relatively high number of members of SDUM is not an isolated phenomena. According to data which we gathered from the Central Register, there are 65 Political Parties in North Macedonia. We excluded 15 which in the past local and Parliamentary elections realized some results and we asked them – how many members do they have? According to a high profiled official of VMRO-DPMNE, they have around 100.000 members. DUI informs that they have 75.000 members. The Democratic Union states that they have issued 34.000 membership cards, and the Alliance for Albanians 20.000. If you add up the numbers of the 12 parties that answered us, they alone have 351,500 members. If we use the estimates from “the book of facts of the CIA”, that North Macedonia has a population of 2.13 million citizens, this means that 16.5% of the population, or that every sixth citizen is a member of a political party. The reality is even scarier when a comparison is made of how many citizens in the developed countries have membership cards. Thus, if SDSM has about 3% of the population in the country, and VMRO-DPMNE about 4.7%, in Great Britain, for example, the ruling Boris Johnson Conservative Party has 191,000 members in a country of 66 million, only 0.29% of the population have membership cards of the Government! In Germany, the ruling party CDU of the Chancellor Angela Merkel has 407.000 members which is 0.5% of the German population. The party of the French President Emanuel Macron has around 420.000 members or nearly 0.63% of the population. However, as we go to the south of Europe, things change. The Governing HDZ in Croatia has 220.000 members in a country of four million citizens, which is 5.5% of the population. The absolute leader in the region is SNS from the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The party has 750.000 members in a country which has nearly 7 million citizens, which is 10.71% of the population.

The racism towards the Roma is a luxury we must not afford

If the young Roma get a chance and support, they could be the base of the economic recovery and development. If the discrimination of the Roma is decreased in Macedonia, the state can increase the incomes of the Budget from 42 to 116.2 million euros per year. However their success depends on the surpassing of the anti-gypsysm which is now a barrier, which they themselves cannot overcome, said Neda Korunovska, the director in the Department, Office for Roma initiatives within the network of the Open Society Foundation. The public policies in the region, treat the Roma only as a social problem which needs to be solved, or which are mostly ignored. There is a lack of vision and leadership in order to see the potential of the Roma, and them to be recognized as an important resource for the region. This, somewhat explains the economic stagnation and weakness of the democratic core. The search to exit the crisis in which we are now due to the pandemic is an opportunity, an opportunity to change things. Over 10 years or so, the World Bank showed to Bulgaria that the discrimination of the Roma is causing budget losses of at least 370 million euros per year. Having in mind that this is the poorest country in the European Union, this, mildly said is a luxury. On the other hand, if there’s a decrease of the discrimination of the Roma in Macedonia, the state could increase the incomes of the Budget from 42 to 116.2 million euros per year. Allegedly, the total budget benefits from the productivity are between 27.9 and 101.7 million euros, while as the tax incomes are in the rank between 4.0 and 14.5 million euros (depending on whether data from the 2002 Census of the Roma population are used, or the 2012 estimates from the Council of Europe).

Macedonia: The aid of 100 Euros does not reach everyone who needs it

The amount of social welfare, although a few years ago was increased from 65 euros to 120 to 150 euros, depending on the number of family members, did not solve all the existential problems of the people who need help from the state the most. In these February winter days, about a hundred socially endangered families with sick, elderly or unemployed members, or more children are supported by that assistance, their condition and position are aggravated by additional interruptions in the receipt of money due to unpaid debts. There are many families, utility bills are higher than the amount of social assistance. They are left without any income and live in fear of further impoverishment.

Macedonia has 32 thousand beneficiaries of social welfare, and due to the pandemic an additional number of 5.500 citizens are registered as social welfare users. They receive additional 15 euros for bills due to the pandemic.

The NGO Sector says that the aid, which for some is not enough to even pay the bills, is additionally reduced due to the money that the people have to give to the banks in order to unblock their bank accounts. They say that some of the debt collectors, when the activists hand them a confirmation paper that the individual is a social welfare user, their accounts are unblocked, however the bank still charges them at around 25 euros for provision, and in case if the debt collector is out of the country, the beneficiaries cannot get their welfare due to the fact that their accounts are blocked.
