In Poland, Romani refugees from Ukraine have faced discrimination and rejection from the start of Russia's full-fledged invasion

The beginning of Russia's full-fledged invasion of Ukraine found me in Warsaw. I had followed the news on TV that Putin would attack Ukraine, there was a lot of information and speculation on this subject in the media. On the morning of 24 February 2022, Russia indeed sent missiles into Ukraine. Still, there was hope that this was only an attempt to intimidate and cause panic. In Warsaw, large numbers of people were buying up goods and it was challenging to refuel my car because there were long queues at gas stations. People were afraid Putin would attack Poland as well.

That same day, thousands and then hundreds of thousands of people began to cross the border with Ukraine and to enter Poland. As a Romani activist in Poland, I received information within a short time about the Romani community from Ukraine trying to cross the border. I also heard about people who were not of ethnic Ukrainian origin who were not treated on an equal footing with other Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war.

I received many questions from various social organizations and coordinators of refugee accommodation places about how to help the Romani Ukrainian refugees. Amongst the requests for help were also complaints about the people of Romani origin arriving at the border: “They do not follow the rules of coexistence in the place”, “We see that ethnic Ukrainians do not want to stay near them.” I was surprised to see longstanding stereotypical opinions about Romani people resurfacing even in an emergency, during a war.

The newly elected member of the Serbian Parliament, the famous Dr. Branimir Nestorović insultingly described his colleagues from the Parliament as "Gypsies"

The MP and leader of the movement "We - voice of the people" is the famous doctor Branimir Nestorovic. As a newly elected member of parliament, he called his colleagues from the opposition "gypsies" at the constituent session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

With this behavior, Nestorović shows that he is not representative of all citizens, his discriminatory behavior shows and supports hatred, racism and intolerance towards the Roma community.

By the way, Nestorovic attracted the attention of the public at the very beginning of the corona virus pandemic in Serbia, when at a press conference in which President Aleksandar Vucic also spoke, he said that the corona virus is "the funniest virus that exists on Facebook".

Slovak PM smears Romani people at Davos, calling them "gypsies", Romani MPs call it systemic racism and an enormous delusion

In his usual way, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico scapegoat the Roma citizens, branding them hard to employ. This is just a statement of political primitivism used to hide the absence of political responsibility.

But the Roma MPs in the Slovak National Assembly responded swiftly showing we don’t tolerate this. MP Irena Biháriová criticized Fico for attacking the most vulnerable to save his reputation and highlighted the irony of his colleagues being paid despite their absence from the Parliament.

MP Ingrid Kosová called Fico's comments a demonstration of institutional racism.

MP Peter Pollák countered Fico's claim about the work ethic of the Roma, stating that Roma people are motivated to work and seek opportunity, not handouts, and stressed the need to address discrimination by employers.

Belgrade: Unknown perpetrators attacked Roma employees in the PE "Gradska Chistoća"

The president of the interim administration of the city of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić, condemned the insolent attack of three young Roma, workers of the "City Cleanliness" PUC in the night between Saturday and Sunday on Zeleni Venac. The utility worker told the youths not to litter on the sidewalk, whereupon they pounced on him, kicking and dragging him as he tried to defend himself.

- It is impermissible for an employee of "City Cleanliness", who is just doing his job, to be attacked and threaten his safety at the workplace. The worker told them not to throw trash on the sidewalk, which is a perfectly normal warning to people who disobey the order. I hope that the delinquents will be properly punished and such things will not happen again. Let's not forget that "City Cleanliness" works every Saturday, Sunday, day, night, holidays and in all weather conditions. We have to respect their work - said Aleksandar Sapić.

The incident happened in front of passers-by, and a video appeared on social networks showing one of the three attackers hitting the worker with a broom and then throwing himself at him. This is not the first incident and attack on a worker in city services. Together with GSP drivers, "City Cleanliness" workers are most often attacked and receive insults, threats, and often blows almost daily.
